Acclaimed maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt returns to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to lead a performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 in his final concert with the Concertgebouworkest in 2013. Bruckner wrote his Fifth Symphony in Vienna, the city in which he composed most of his symphonies. The work stands out from the others, however, in that its general profile is more cerebral than mystical. The divine light of Bruckner’s faith shines through in his impressive mastery of contrapuntal or counterpoint technique, a music technique that involves using multiple independent melody lines together.
