L'equivoco stravagante (The Bizarre Misunderstanding) is one of Rossini's earliest operas, written in 1811 when he was only 19 years old. The title of Rossini's first dramma giocoso in two acts refers to a misunderstanding and false story spread by a scheming servant. He deceives the suitor, Buralichio, into believing the girl he is wooing, Ernestina, is actually a man whose nouveau riche father, Gamberotto, had 'him' castrated as a child so that he could pursue a high-earning career as a soprano singer. With an appropriate nod to the Commedia dell'arte (the singers all wear comically long fake noses), this lively production from the Rossini Opera Festival 2019 is staged by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier with Carlo Rizzi leading the RAI Orchestra and the Coro del Teatro Ventidio Basso.
