Apart from its overture, the spirited opera L’Italiana in Algeri - the most “buffo” of Rossini’s buffo operas - had long been neglected on opera and concert stages. In honor of its 200th anniversary, it returned to the Rossini Opera Festival with Davide Livermore’s “virtuoso production rich in colors, over-the-top costumes and endless gags” (La Libre) that transposes the action to the 1960s, where an Algerian “Bey” and his court live in a psychedelic wonderland of miniskirts and lava lamps, revue-style sequined costumes, and delirious, Arabian Nights-style twirling colors. Anna Goryachova is “an ideal performer, both as a singer and actor” (Online Musik Magazin) performing the demanding lead role of Isabella. Alex Esposito performs the role of Mustafa with “a robust and authoritative voice of supreme quality.” (Operaclick)
