Written in French in 1828 for the Paris Opéra, Le Comte Ory has maintained its popularity and success to this day. Re-using some of the music from his Viaggio a Reims, Rossini turns the disguise-based libretto into a spirited play of erotic lightness by creating what one critic called “the most innovative, mysterious, seductive, exciting and memorable Rossini opera - neither entirely buffo nor entirely serious." Lluís Pasqual’s witty and clever production at the Rossini Opera Festival features his 1930s inspired sets and costumes and a dynamic, international cast headed by tenor Yijie Shi in the title role, Laura Polverelli as his astute page and María José Moreno as Countess Adèle. Paolo Carignani conducts the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna with verve and brio along with the Prague Chamber Choir.
