Patrice Bart's staging of the Nutcracker holiday classic premiered at Berlin State Opera in 1999. Christmas provides the realistic setting for a fantastic plot featuring Vladimir Malakhov—one of the greatest dancers of his generation—with Nadja Saidakova dancing the famous Grand Pas de Deux and Oliver Matz as Drosselmeyer. Daniel Barenboim leads Staatskapelle Berlin in capturing the melodic intensity of Tchaikovsky’s famous score.
